Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is often the procedure of choice for women after pregnancy, and for both men and women after significant weight loss. Because a tummy
tuck can remove excess skin and tighten stomach muscles, the procedure can offer a result that is close to your pre-pregnancy or pre-weight gain body shape.
This procedure is frequently performed in combination with
liposuction (especially around the sides of the stomach,
hips, and thighs) to give additional contouring.
We have prepared this introduction to our Abdominoplasty Surgery procedures we offer at our offices in Jacksonville, Florida to give you an idea of what the tummy tuck procedure involves and how you can prepare. However the details of your particular surgery will be discussed with you in detail by your surgeon.
A tummy tuck procedure takes between two and five hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The most common methods for performing a tummy tuck are the full and mini tummy tuck.
The mini tummy tuck is the preferred procedure for those who have minor contour problems without a lot of loose skin, and need more correction than liposuction alone can provide. The mini tummy tuck procedure uses a short U-shaped incision which is made just above the pubic region. Excess skin is removed and the muscles are tightened which moves the belly button down slightly.
The traditional, the full tummy tuck is much more common as it offers much greater correction and a more noticeable result. The full tummy tuck procedure uses an incision which is made slightly above the pubic area from one hipbone to the other. A second incision is made to free the navel from the surrounding tissue. The skin is separated from the abdominal wall up to the ribs and lifted to expose the muscles. The muscles are tightened and sewn in place. If you have muscle separation, pulling your muscles closer together and suturing them will give a tighter look to your abdomen. The skin is stretched back across the abdomen and extra skin is removed. Your belly button is then repositioned and sutured in place. Finally, all incisions are sutured, dressings applied and temporary tubes may be inserted to drain excess fluids.
What to tell your plastic surgeon
During your consultation you should be very open. Provide your surgeon with all of your medical history and list all of the medications, vitamins and herbs you are taking (even if you don’t think they’re important). Every person has a unique perspective on their ideal appearance and your goals will affect the way your surgery is performed.
The following points may help you reduce scarring, shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications:
- Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, as well as supplements such as fish oil, and Vitamin E for two weeks before and a few days after your procedure. These act as blood thinners and could cause problems with blood clotting. Our staff will provide a complete list of medications to avoid. Tylenol and a standard multivitamin are allowed both before and immediately after surgery.
- Stop smoking for at least two weeks before and one week after surgery as nicotine can impair circulation and healing.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure including tanning booths, facials, steaming masks, and the use of other skin irritants.
- Do not drink alcohol in excess before or after surgery.
- Drink several glasses of water in the days leading up to and following your procedure.
To make your recovery easier and more comfortable be sure to:
• Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first day.
• Fill your prescriptions and have them within easy reach of where you will be resting.
•Drink lots of water, stretch your calves and take short walks early in your recovery. Hydration and early mobilization are very important to minimize the risk of leg vein clots.
Post Abdominoplasty Surgery
We will of course advise you and caution you about what to do and not do after your tummy tuck surgery, and what you should expect based on your particular procedure. However, in general you should expect bruising, swelling and the need to manage your pain as you recover. You may also notice some loss of sensation. This is normal as your nerves will begin to regenerate after surgery and return to normal. Swelling is also a factor after tummy tuck surgery and may last for a number of months before you completely recover. However, severe pain is not normal and in the event you experience sever pain after tummy tuck surgery, you should immediately alert you surgeon.
Everyone recovers differently and at a different pace. However patients can generally expect to, or make an effort to be up and walking the day after surgery. You may shower after your dressings and drains (if placed) have been removed. Expect to be out of work and away from your usual activities for at least a week after a mini tummy tuck and for two to three weeks after a full tummy tuck. During this period you may gradually return to normal activities. You will need to avoid high impact activities for about one month. In particular, you should avoid jogging and bouncing activities for up to six weeks. These precautions will help you avoid stress to your treated areas and allow time for your tissue to heal and recover.
While there will be permanent scars, they will be well hidden when you’re wearing clothing, and low enough to even be concealed by a swimsuit in most cases. After about nine months to a year, your scars will usually flatten and become less noticeable.
As we mentioned, results will vary from person to person as we are all different. However we are very proud to have made such a positive difference for so many of our patients.
