PVPS Announces Two New Light-Based Treatments
Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery is pleased to announce two new light-based treatment programs for skin rejuvenation — Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and the Erbium Laser.Light- or laser-based therapies have received much attention in the media, accompanied by both realistic and unrealistic claims. The various lasers and brand-name therapies have produced confusion among many patients, and Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery will try to clarify some of the most important points here. All forms of laser and light therapy use amplified light to treat the skin. Each type of treatment has distinct goals, recovery time and results.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) a.k.a. Foto-Facial, Photofacial
IPL uses pulses of light similar to a very powerful camera flash. This therapy effectively reduces sun spots, skin discoloration and superficial blood vessels,as well as the redness and flushing from rosacea. Sun damage and brown spots of the chest and hands may also be treated. Some patients note subtle improvements in skin texture and pore size. IPL treatments are performed in the clinic with a mild numbing cream and usually last from 30-45 minutes. Following treatment, the skin may become light red and feel like a mild sunburn for several hours. Brown spots become darkerand usually flake off in 7-10 days. Make-up may be applied the following day and normal activity resumed immediately. Three treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart are necessary to achieve optimal benefits.
IPL may also be used with Levulan, a photosensitizing agent, to treat acne and precancerous lesions called actinic keratoses or AKs.
Microlaser Peel (MLP)
The Sciton Erbium laser may be utilized as a full resurfacing laser or more superficially for a microlaser peel. The MLP is designed to remove superficial skin discoloration and to improve the texture of the skin. The depth of laser treatments determines both the results and the recovery time. The microlaser peel removes just the outer layers of the epidermis to a depth of 10 to 40 microns. For purposes of comparison, microdermabrasion removes approximately 4 microns and full resurfacing, greater than 240 microns. The MLP is usually performed with a numbing cream and takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Cool compresses and ointment are adequate to relieve the “sunburned” feel following treatment. The skin peels over 2-3 days after which make-up may be applied. This treatment may be used alone or in combination with IPL to rejuvenate sun-damaged skin and to improve fine wrinkles.
Erbium Laser Resurfacing
The erbium laser may be utilized at higher energies to precisely remove the sun damage and wrinkles of the outer skin layers. The skin heals with a much smoother texture and color. Erbium laser resurfacing remains the gold standard for improving the fine lines of the lower eyelids, vertical lip lines and coarse wrinkles throughout the face. Different regions, such as the eyelids or around the mouth, may be treated separately or with the entire face. Treatments are
performed in the operating room under local anesthetic with mild intravenous sedation and last from 30 minutes to 1-1/2 hours. Initial recovery is home based and requires a skincare commitment from
the patient. Primary healing takes place within seven days after which cover make-up may be applied and normal activities resumed. The skin may remain pink for six weeks to three months, but in properly selected patients the results are worth the recovery.
