LASER RESURFACING - PONTE VEDRA PLASTIC SURGERY
Laser procedures are a very popular topic in plastic surgery. Laser resurfacing refers to a technique where we utilize a laser to very precisely remove the outer layers of the skin. In many cases, that's the only way to produce a significant reduction in wrinkling. When we remove the outer layers of the skin, we're doing two things. The first that we're actually removing the wrinkles themselves. The second is that as the skin heals, the dermis remodels and synthesizes new collagen and that leads to a much smoother skin tone, a reduction in wrinkles, and an improvement in texture. We help patients choose the laser procedure that's right for them by discussing with them both their goals and expectations of the treatment as well as how much down time they have. Patients who have a limited amount of downtime may wish to undergo the fractional resurfacing. You can achieve noticeable benefits in skin color, tone, and texture with a fractional resurfacing but limited benefits with respect to wrinkle reduction. A full resurfacing treatment will produce dramatic results with wrinkle reduction. With the erbium laser, you can have a very natural skin color and limited, if any, demarkation between the treated and untreated areas. Full resurfacing does carry with it several days of absolute downtime, meaning that the patient needs to stay home. After about six or seven days, we get most patients in the cover makeup so that they can resume their normal social activities certainly no later than 10 days following the treatment. There are several types of laser procedures that improve the appearance of the skin. The first type is not a laser at all and that's intense pulse light. Our nurse practitioners perform intense pulse light to improve the color of the skin. It is a terrific technique for reducing brown spots and reducing the visible blood vessels on the surface of the skin. The next degree of skin treatment is fractional laser treatments. Our nurse practitioners perform fractional laser resurfacing in the superficial layers of the skin. This type of treatment carries with two to three days of downtime and produces noticeable improvements in skin color, tone, and texture. They do not produce any significant reduction in the wrinkling. Deeper fractional treatments are best performed under anesthesia. These treatments produce dramatic improvements in skin color, tone, and texture and a very modest degree of improvement in fine lines and wrinkles. Resurfacing is the most aggressive form of skin treatment. It produces dramatic improvements in wrinkles as well as improvements in color, tone, and texture. Those treatments can be performed under local anesthesia if just a small area is being treated or a general anesthetic if you're treating an entire face. Patients who would like a significant improvement in their skin color, tone, and texture are great candidates for fractional laser treatments. Patients who would like a significant reduction in their wrinkles are better candidates for resurfacing. Nothing delivers skin rejuvenation like laser skin resurfacing. It does carry with it some downtime and patients have to be prepared for that. Patients who are willing to undertake the procedure and the downtime will have outstanding results and much improved appearance of skin. The best way to decide what treatments best for the patient is with a detailed consultation with the plastic surgeon.
