Male Breast Reduction: Reveal the Real You

Every man is born with some soft tissue covering his pectoralis muscles. When this breast tissue overgrows into larger breasts, the pecs are often hidden. Through male breast reduction surgery, the excessive tissue is removed so the natural contour and shape of the chest wall can be seen. Men who wish to tone and strengthen their chest muscles will have equal opportunity to do so. Strength training will help lead to optimal results once this tissue has been removed.

Patient Testimonial

“I’m so happy with the result. Dr. Sternberg explained the surgery well during my consultation and answered all questions. I had great confidence in the team on the day of surgery. I spoke with Dr. Sternberg before surgery, in the OR, and afterwards. There was not a long wait in the office for appointments; his staff was very personable and helpful. And I greatly appreciated the one-on-one relationship with his nurse.”

Gynecomastia Surgery Details

All male breast reduction procedures are performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery typically lasts about an hour.

Male breast reduction in Jacksonville is performed through a special liposuction technique. This technique removes the fatty tissue under the skin.

During this approach, a small incision is made around the areola (intra-areolar). This allows access for a suction device to move through the chest and remove fat and tissue. Some men with milder cases of gynecomastia may require liposuction alone to attain good results. In severe gynecomastia cases, an en bloc resection of excessive breast tissue and tightening of loose skin may be necessary. This includes nipple grafting, and may require a staged surgery.

What is Recovery Like After Male Beast Reduction Surgery?

Following surgery, there will be some swelling. A compression garment should be worn for 1-2 weeks. Most patients are able to resume normal work schedules within a few days and incorporate exercise within four weeks. This surgery allows men to feel more confident when exposing their chest due to a firmer, flatter chest.

Is gynecomastia surgery covered by insurance?

Is liposuction always needed?

In most cases, yes. The soft tissue and fat that collects in excess will need to be removed using liposuction. There are many liposuction techniques to consider. Some are less invasive and can help the skin become tighter on the chest wall. These methods can be discussed during your consultation.

What about scarring?

In most cases, scarring is inconspicuous and incisions for this surgery are well concealed. They are usually placed around or near the areola and are typically small enough that scarring is minimized. Over time, the incision lines will fade and become almost nonexistent for most men.

How long will the results of gynecomastia surgery last?

The results of gynecomastia surgery are generally long-lasting, as the excess tissue is permanently removed. However, maintaining a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle is key to preserving the results over time.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients can return to work and light activities within a week, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for about 4-6 weeks. Your surgeon will provide a detailed recovery plan tailored to your needs.

Will my chest look natural after surgery?

Yes, our surgeons aim to create a smooth, natural chest contour by carefully removing excess tissue and reshaping the area. The results are designed to enhance your overall physique while maintaining a balanced appearance.

Is gynecomastia surgery covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage depends on the severity of the condition and whether it’s deemed medically necessary. During your consultation, we can assist in determining if your procedure qualifies for coverage and help navigate the insurance process.
