For people who are tired of shaving, tweezing and waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair reduction treatments have become the preferred option. While hair reduction is most popular among women, treatments for men are increasingly popular as they seek treatment for unwanted hair on the chest, back, and ears. During laser hair reduction, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Those who have the best success using laser hair reduction have pale skin and dark hair. Those with grey or white, blond, light brown or red hair won’t see results. It is possible to treat darker skin tones at lower energy levels thus requiring more treatments. To achieve noticeable hair reduction, a minimum of six treatments are required. In all cases, maintenance treatments are also required to address regrowth, usually on an annual basis. Patients can expect to see up to 80% improvement in hair reduction. Successful laser hair reduction ultimately depends on the individual’s response to the treatment. By Connie Jongewaard, Board Certified Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner
