What is a Breast Lift?
A Mastopexy, commonly called a “breast lift” procedure, is performed to counteract the effects associated with gravity, aging, weight loss, and pregnancy. For women with stretched skin, drooping breasts, and a loss of volume in the upper region of their breasts, a breast lift can return the breasts to a more youthful shape and position. This procedure enables women to gain self-confidence, enhance their self-esteem, and expand their wardrobe choices. At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery our skilled team of certified surgeons offer a number of techniques to properly lift and shape the breasts.
What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?
- Lifts breast tissue that has migrated downward
- Delivers a perkier, more youthful appearance
- Improves contour of the entire breast mound
- Corrects nipples that are positioned very low
- Provides symmetry for uneven breasts
- Tightens excess, loose skin on the breasts
- Boosts self-image and confidence
“BEST decision I’ve ever made!...When I woke up from surgery, my life instantly changed. My recovery was easy…I’m 45 and for the first time in my life, I’m not disgusted to look at my breasts. Seriously ladies, it’s a life-changer!”

Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery offers Crisalix Virtual Aesthetics, allowing patients to “try on” their new breasts before the procedure. Your body will be scanned into the software, where you can then choose between various sizes and even the different types of breast implants. By wearing the virtual reality headset, you will even be able to see what you would look like from your own point of view (looking down at your body).

Breast augmentation surgery with implants will help increase breast size, but it will not help women if their breasts sag or droop downward past a certain point. Some doctors may use implants to help with sagging. With this approach, the immediate results may look better, but the additional weight causes the breasts to sag further. Some women find a breast lift is the only procedure they need to achieve the fullness they desire, and determine implants aren’t necessary. During the consultation, we will discuss whether a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combination of both will attain the best results.
What is Recovery Like After a Breast Lift?
Recovery following a breast lift in Jacksonville will vary depending on whether it was a stand-alone surgery or if it occurred in conjunction with another body contouring procedure. Patients will go home the same day as the procedure wearing a post-op supportive bra. Most patients are able to resume their normal work schedules within a few days. Exercise will be a gradual process, with most women able to resume their exercise routines within 6-8 weeks. (These include running and weight training.) Avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds for two weeks, and then for one month after that, nothing over 20 pounds.
What Types of Incisions Are Used During a Breast Lift?
The degree of lift will determine how many incisions are needed and where they will be placed. Once the incisions are made, excess skin and tissue are removed, and the nipple and areola are re-positioned for a natural placement.
The sutures during our breast lift in Jacksonville are placed deep in the breast wall to secure and hold the breast up firmly. There are several incision placements to consider:
- Around the curvature of the areola (the tissue immediately surrounding the nipple)
- Vertically on the bottom of the areola, down to the crease under the breast
- Horizontally beneath the breast following the natural crease
Breast Lift Surgical Details
Our breast lift in Jacksonville is performed under general anesthesia and is considered an outpatient procedure. Operative time in most cases is between 1-2 hours.
The type of incision used during a breast lift procedure will vary depending on the degree of lift and whether implants will be placed during the surgery.
If implants are a part of the procedure — whether silicone or saline — they will be placed under the pectoralis muscle.
This method provides additional support and helps to keep the breasts in a higher position for a longer period of time. In situations where a larger implant is desired, a supportive tissue matrix may be used as a sling to hold the implants in place.
During a breast lift procedure, the nipple and areola will be placed in a location on the breast that is natural and proportionate. The goal during this surgery is to reduce the size of the areola (the area surrounding the nipple) so it looks balanced with the new breast size and shape.
