Microdermabrasion in Jacksonville, FL

Microdermabrasion is performed using a small and mildly abraded wand-like instrument connected to a machine that provides mild suction. This combination removes surface-damaged, dead skin. Anesthesia is not required, as the microdermabrasion treatment is relatively painless other than a minor tingling as the wand removes the damaged skin.

While early versions of microdermabrasion were essentially like running a sandblaster over the face — leaving particles behind — modern microdermabrasion uses tools that give the technician much more control. Current microdermabrasion treatments gently loosen and remove dead skin cells, which are then vacuumed away for smooth, polished skin.

What Does Microdermabrasion Do?

Microdermabrasion is an effective treatment for all skin types, is virtually risk-free from side effects (other than minor redness immediately following treatment), and does not require a recuperation period. This procedure has the ability to:

  • Exfoliate the skin
  • Reduce scarring
  • Stimulate collagen
  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles
  • Clear up the skin
  • Even out and smooth skin tone
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Decrease acne

How Microdermabrasion Works

Dead skin cells can often accumulate on the uppermost layer of the skin, which makes it look dull. Not only that; these dead skin cells can also cause skin problems and contribute to lines and wrinkles.

Microdermabrasion uses a special handheld tool to remove this upper layer of skin to uncover the healthy layer underneath. Microdermabrasion is more than just an exfoliating treatment; it’s a powerful way to refresh and rejuvenate your complexion.

What Happens During Microdermabrasion?

Before the microdermabrasion procedure, your aesthetician will ask about any skin conditions you may have (such as acne, eczema, dermatitis, or inflamed rosacea) and any topicals that may make your skin sensitive (such as retinol or other exfoliants). Your aesthetician will also ensure that you have no open wounds or sores that could be irritated or infected by the microdermabrasion treatment. Once your face has been cleansed and prepared, the microdermabrasion treatment will start. Your aesthetician will carefully use the microdermabrasion instrument to polish your skin while suctioning away the dead skin cells. (You may see your dead skin peeling and falling away during the procedure.) Microdermabrasion can take from 30-60 minutes to complete.

Recovery

After your microdermabrasion treatment, you can expect some slight pinkness of the skin, but there’s generally no pain. You should always be vigilant about using sun protection, especially for the first week after your microdermabrasion procedure.

You should also speak to your Skin Health Specialist after treatment about the best skincare products to maintain your results. Once the dead skin cells are removed, skincare products are better able to penetrate and treat the skin.

Microdermabrasion vs. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels vary in strength from light peels (which have results similar to microdermabrasion) to deep peels for more intense results. Recovery usually takes 7-8 days for a deep peel. During recovery, you will need to apply special post-peel products. Chemical peels results can last from a few months for a light peel to years for a deep peel.
