Fat Grafting or Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are an extraordinarily effective and popular treatment for hiding wrinkles, providing lift, and achieving volume. For many patients, dermal fillers are exactly what they want. However, other patients who want results similar to what dermal fillers can achieve may find that their own fat is preferable as a filler for several reasons.
One reason is that the results last much longer than dermal fillers. Other reasons are that facial fat grafting is completely organic, with nothing foreign being introduced to the body. This reduces the risk of an allergic reaction. And then finally, fat often provides a more natural-looking and feeling option than dermal fillers. This is a personal choice that will be unique to every patient. During your consultation, your specialist can help you weigh the pros and cons of each treatment.
What Happens During a Facial Fat Grafting Procedure?
Facial fat grafting involves three steps: liposuction, fat purification, and injection. The procedure can be done under either local or general anesthesia; it will depend on the amount of fat being removed. In liposuction, tiny incisions are made near the area of the body where fat will be removed.
These incisions are so small that, once healed, they are barely visible. A cannula will be used to break up and remove the fat from the body. Once the fat is removed, it will be purified so prepared for injection. When this step is complete, your surgeon will administer the fat into areas of the face where volume is needed. We use a cannula instead of a needle, as this allows for better precision and control; less swelling and bruising, and fewer injections.

Recovery and Results
After facial fat grafting, you can expect to take about a week off from work and social events due to the swelling and possible bruising. You will need to keep the surgical bandages on and avoid strenuous activities until we advise otherwise.
It’s important for patients who choose facial fat grafting to be aware that results are not immediate like they are with dermal fillers. It’s also important to understand that some of the fat may not “take” in its new environment. In general, 40%-50% of the fat will survive, and repeat treatments may be needed. It takes approximately six months for results from facial fat grafting to become fully settled. Once the desired results are achieved, they are long-lasting (3-5 years).
