Rejuvenate Your Skin with Precision
At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, we use a medical laser to gently remove layers of skin to improve cosmetic flaws. During a laser skin resurfacing procedure, our surgeons use a small laser wand to delicately remove layers of skin with great precision. Laser skin resurfacing is also non-invasive, and your provider will be able to control the depth the laser is allowed to penetrate the skin, allowing for total control over the laser and to assure the desired result.
What Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Address?
- Wrinkles
- Sun-damaged skin
- Scars from acne
- Uneven tone and texture
- Scars from surgery or injury
- Dark spots
- Pigmentation
- Stretch marks
- Also builds new collagen
What are the Technical Variations?
We offer high-quality laser skin resurfacing using an erbium laser. This is a non-ablative laser, meaning it does not totally destroy the epidermis (top layer of skin), compared to ablative lasers which remove the epidermis. As a more superficial treatment, an erbium laser can still address fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and mild scarring.
The erbium laser is very precise and targets water in the skin tissue to evaporate superficial cells, which results in thermal injury to kick-start collagen remodeling. Because the outer layer of skin isn’t damaged with an erbium laser, the downtime after this procedure is typically fairly fast (1-2 weeks).
Ablation vs. Non-Ablation for Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is either ablative or non-ablative. During an ablative procedure, an intense beam of laser light energy is directed at the skin, removing the outer thin layers. This process generally results in a longer recovery. The results, however, can be a bit more dramatic. A non-ablative laser does not remove any layers of skin. Instead, it stimulates the growth of collagen, which helps tighten underlying skin. This process offers a lighter recovery. Results will not be immediate but will appear over the course of multiple appointments. You may be wondering, “Ablative or non-ablative?” While one is not better than the other, they have varying degrees of intensity and recovery. Both techniques provide nice results. During your initial consultation, we will discuss which is best for you. Factors include your personal aesthetic goals, skin type, and how much downtime can be tolerated.
What Happens During Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing removes the outer layer of skin and heats the underlying layer to stimulate the growth of new collagen fibers. During this process, damaged skin cells on the outer layer are stripped away, leaving a new layer of healthy skin to grow. If small sections of the face are being addressed, the procedure will typically take about 45 minutes.
A full-face treatment, or larger areas of skin, can take up to two hours. Multiple sessions are sometimes needed to attain the desired results.
“I underwent an ablative skin laser resurfacing procedure at PVPS. Very professional, and was quite a well-organized team. Highly recommend anyone who is looking for any form of laser treatment by an expert.”

Recovery and Results After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Some mild swelling will occur after a laser resurfacing treatment. It’s common for the face to have crust and scaling as it heals. The treated area may appear red or pink for several weeks. Normal activities can usually resume within a couple of weeks.
Patients who have sensitive skin or who have had adverse reactions to facial products may have increased side effects. Laser skin resurfacing will leave the face exposed with a new layer of healthy (yet sensitive) skin. It is advised to wear sunscreen every day and limit sun exposure as much as possible.
While laser skin resurfacing in Jacksonville does not stop the aging process, the results can still be long-lasting. As you continue to age, you may consider additional laser skin resurfacing treatments.

I cannot say enough things about Dr. Bates and his Nurse!!! From my first visit to surgery and PostOp, the care I received has been top notch. When I had a minor complication Dr Bates was quick to give me a call and answer any questions I had. His bedside manner is what really sets him apart. If you’re thinking about using Dr. Bates just do it!!!! I will use him again for future operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does laser skin resurfacing cost?
The cost for laser skin resurfacing varies according to the technology used and the number and size of areas treated. The average cost can range between $5,000-$10,000. Factors included are medications (including anesthesia if needed), practitioner’s fee, and machine use costs. We also offer two financing options, CareCredit® and Alphaeon® Credit, to help pay for these procedures if needed.
Can laser skin resurfacing damage my skin?
The laser skin resurfacing procedure was created to improve the appearance of the skin. However, an inexperienced individual can damage the skin unintentionally. That’s why it’s so important to find a laser skin resurfacing professional who understands how the various laser technologies interact with different skin types. If done correctly, the results can be effective and long-lasting.
Can laser skin resurfacing treat all skin types?
Laser skin resurfacing is more effective on certain skin types than others. Some lasers are better suited for lighter skin tones, while others are safer for darker complexions to avoid pigmentation issues. It’s crucial to have a consultation with an experienced provider to determine the best laser for your specific skin type.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of laser skin resurfacing sessions varies depending on the condition being treated and the desired results. Some patients achieve their goals in a single session, while others may require a series of treatments for optimal results, especially when addressing deep wrinkles or significant scarring.
Can laser skin resurfacing be combined with other treatments?
Yes, laser skin resurfacing can often be combined with other cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers or Botox® to enhance overall results. Depending on your aesthetic goals, your provider may recommend a combination approach to address different skin concerns simultaneously, such as wrinkles, texture, and volume loss.
