A neck lift specifically addresses the neck and eliminates hanging neck skin, muscular bands, and excess fat that mask a smooth and defined neck and jaw contour. At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, Florida, our team of certified surgeons specialize in many cosmetic procedures, including those involving the neck. We work closely with patients, offering them the best care and medical services available, as well as many treatment options to meet their cosmetic needs. Through neck lift surgery, we help patients to get rid of the unappealing "turkey neck" and create a smooth, contoured neck and jaw. In most cases, incisions are confined behind the ears or under the surface of the chin. Liposuction may be used as well to remove excess fat and tighten the skin. Most of the time, a neck lift is performed in conjunction with a facelift.
A neck lift will address several issues including the removal of excess fat, the trimming of hanging skin and the tightening of loose skin around the underlying neck muscles. An incision is made under the chin, and in some cases, behind or in front of the ears. If fat removal is part of this surgery, liposuction will be the first step. Next, the neck muscles (platysma) are pulled tight and the overlying skin is stretched and re-draped to achieve the desired definition. Sutures are placed deep within the neck wall and a drain may be inserted to control bleeding.
A neck lift is considered an outpatient procedure, performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. This surgery typically takes 2 hours to complete, but that will vary by surgical case. After surgery, there will be some bruising and swelling. Patients will feel tightness and a pulling sensation as the neck adjusts to its new position. Most patients are able to return to work within 7-10 days. It can take several months for the optimal results to appear and for the neck to look and feel natural.
Neck Lift FAQs
Nonsurgical Neck Lift?
Loose skin within the neck is a distinct flaw that can only be removed through surgery. Unfortunately, this is the only true way to redefine a person’s neck and add the necessary definition needed to improve the contour and profile.
A neck lift does require an incision under the chin and near the ears. However, these are placed inconspicuously (within the hairline on the ears and under the chin) so looking straight ahead you will not see them. We make every effort during surgery to minimize visible scarring as much as possible.
Individuals in their 20s and 30s may benefit from a neck lift, especially those who have experienced a massive weight loss or have a hereditary defect of the neck. Patients in their 60s and 70s often undergo a neck lift to cosmetically treat the visible signs of aging.
Neck or Chin?
Some patients will have issues with their neck, but these problems may actually be the result of a “weak chin.” Without the proper support of the chin bone, the neck isn’t able to have a defined contour. A chin implant (genioplasty or mentoplasty) may be recommended to reshape the chin and make it wider or more prominent. This can have a great impact on the neck for many patients. This surgery is considered a reconstructive procedure and requires the skill of an experienced surgeon. A neck lift may still be needed once the chin has been corrected.
Neck Lift Reviews
"64 Year Old in Need of Natural Lift - Ponte Vedra Beach, FL - Dr. Rumsey is approachable and accessible. I was shocked to have read one review that described him as being aloof or indifferent. This reviewer must have confused Dr. Rumsey with another surgeon. I found Dr. Rumsey to be down to earth and a good listener. He answers questions directly and attempts to explain the process, as well as the medical procedure and inherent medical risks. He is Very likable and the nurses and support staff couldn't be more supportive and caring. More importantly, this doctor is very skilled at his profession. Again if patients want to minimize bruising, scarring, recovery time and obtain natural looking and remarkable results, Dr. Rumsey could be the Plastic Surgeon for you. - - Dr. Rumsey's surgical technique can best be described as "Artistic Precision." Because of his unique approach, experience and skill, I had ZERO, that is Zilch, bruising after undergoing a comprehensive face and neck lift. This is remarkable because I am a 64 year old woman, who bruises easily. There is an art to performing plastic surgery and to achieving remarkable results. Some of my girl friends who used other plastic surgeons had significant bruising, hematomas and related complications-- Not Me. My incision sites are almost invisible. Most importantly, this was the only facility I could find in NE Florida that provides for overnight medical care and monitoring. This is critical in that all surgery has inherent risks and I have been told that most complications occur within 24 hours of a procedure. My only regret is that I did not have eye surgery at the same time. In short, my experience was: no bruising, no scars, received excellent over night medical care and monitoring, had a short recovery time and natural looking results."- D. / RealSelf / Jan 12, 2015
"Dr. Burk his anesthesiologist, nurses and staff were all exceedingly pleasant and professional. They took fabulous care of me to ensure I was comfortable and pain-free. As I write this, it is just one day post-surgery. However, I feel great and the results of my neck lift appear to be beautiful."- J.W. / Office Visit / Sep 19, 2019
The cost for a neck lift procedure will vary depending on the extent of the surgery and whether liposuction was used. If the surgery is combined with another cosmetic facial procedure, then the cost will increase. In general, most patients can expect to pay between $5,500-$8,000 for a complete neck lift.
